ABOUT THE KNEES
What causes knee pain, stiffness and degeneration?
It’s simple really. For most people, when you move (run, walk, jump, etc), the knee joint is subjected to forces that work to bow the leg outwards. This tends to open up the lateral side (outside) and close the medial side (inside) of the knee hence the load is not evenly distributed across the knee. The resulting pressure on the medial joint line places load and pressure on the interior portion of the knee.
Scientifically speaking:
“An external knee adductor moment acts to produce a varus knee angle.” Varus means bending outward.
In practical terms, this is not a good thing.
This continual outward bending of the knee accelerates the degeneration of the inside area of the knee. Unfortunately, the effect is cumulative over time and accelerated further by physical activity. Is it any wonder that so many people experience knee discomfort whether young, middle aged or in their retirement years?
ENOUGH ALREADY
When this outward bending of the knee is resisted and reduced or eliminated, medical research has shown improved physical function and reduced symptoms related to knee osteoarthritis, a primary underlying cause of knee pain and stiffness. This can also reduce fatigue and the chance of injury.
